Preparation
O Lord, open our lips
and our mouth shall proclaim your praise.
This opening prayer may be said
The night has passed, and the day lies open before us; let us pray with one heart and mind.
Silence is kept.
As we rejoice in the gift of this new day, so may the light of your presence, O God, set our hearts on fire with love for you; now and for ever.
Amen.
Psalmody
The appointed psalmody is said.
Psalms 138, 141
1I give you thanks, O LORD, with my whole heart; before the gods I sing your praise;
2I bow down toward your holy temple and give thanks to your name for your steadfast love and your faithfulness, for you have exalted above all things your name and your word.
3On the day I called, you answered me; my strength of soul you increased.
4All the kings of the earth shall give you thanks, O LORD, for they have heard the words of your mouth,
5and they shall sing of the ways of the LORD, for great is the glory of the LORD.
6For though the LORD is high, he regards the lowly, but the haughty he knows from afar.
7Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you preserve my life; you stretch out your hand against the wrath of my enemies, and your right hand delivers me.
8The LORD will fulfill his purpose for me; your steadfast love, O LORD, endures forever. Do not forsake the work of your hands.
1O LORD, I call upon you; hasten to me! Give ear to my voice when I call to you!
2Let my prayer be counted as incense before you, and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice!
3Set a guard, O LORD, over my mouth; keep watch over the door of my lips!
4Do not let my heart incline to any evil, to busy myself with wicked deeds in company with men who work iniquity, and let me not eat of their delicacies!
5Let a righteous man strike me — it is a kindness; let him rebuke me — it is oil for my head; let my head not refuse it. Yet my prayer is continually against their evil deeds.
6When their judges are thrown over the cliff, then they shall hear my words, for they are pleasant.
7As when one plows and breaks up the earth, so shall our bones be scattered at the mouth of Sheol.
8But my eyes are toward you, O GOD, my Lord; in you I seek refuge; leave me not defenseless!
9Keep me from the trap that they have laid for me and from the snares of evildoers!
10Let the wicked fall into their own nets, while I pass by safely.
Each psalm or group of psalms may end with
Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning is now and shall be for ever. Amen.
A Song of David
Refrain:
Splendour and majesty are yours, O God; you are exalted as head over all.
Blessed are you, God of Israel, for ever and ever; for yours is the greatness, the power, the glory, the splendour and the majesty.
Everything in heaven and on earth is yours; yours is the kingdom, O Lord, and you are exalted as head over all.
Riches and honour come from you and you rule over all.
In your hand are power and might; yours it is to give power and strength to all.
And now we give you thanks, our God, and praise your glorious name.
For all things come from you, and of your own have we given you.
1 Chronicles 29.10b-13,14b
Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning is now and shall be for ever. Amen.
Splendour and majesty are yours, O God; you are exalted as head over all.
The Word of God
One or more readings appointed for the day are read.
Isaiah 50.4-10
4The Lord GOD has given me the tongue of those who are taught, that I may know how to sustain with a word him who is weary. Morning by morning he awakens; he awakens my ear to hear as those who are taught.
5The Lord GOD has opened my ear, and I was not rebellious; I turned not backward.
6I gave my back to those who strike, and my cheeks to those who pull out the beard; I hid not my face from disgrace and spitting.
7But the Lord GOD helps me; therefore I have not been disgraced; therefore I have set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be put to shame.
8He who vindicates me is near. Who will contend with me? Let us stand up together. Who is my adversary? Let him come near to me.
9Behold, the Lord GOD helps me; who will declare me guilty? Behold, all of them will wear out like a garment; the moth will eat them up.
10Who among you fears the LORD and obeys the voice of his servant? Let him who walks in darkness and has no light trust in the name of the LORD and rely on his God.
Luke 13.22-30
22He went on his way through towns and villages, teaching and journeying toward Jerusalem.
23And someone said to him, “Lord, will those who are saved be few?” And he said to them,
24“Strive to enter through the narrow door. For many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able.
25When once the master of the house has risen and shut the door, and you begin to stand outside and to knock at the door, saying, ‘Lord, open to us,’ then he will answer you, ‘I do not know where you come from.’
26Then you will begin to say, ‘We ate and drank in your presence, and you taught in our streets.’
27But he will say, ‘I tell you, I do not know where you come from. Depart from me, all you workers of evil!’
28In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God but you yourselves cast out.
29And people will come from east and west, and from north and south, and recline at table in the kingdom of God.
30And behold, some are last who will be first, and some are first who will be last.”
The reading(s) may be followed by a time of silence.
Responsory
A suitable song or chant, or a responsory in this or another form, may follow
Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead.
And Christ shall give you light.
You have died and your life is hid with Christ in God.
Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead.
Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on the earth.
And Christ shall give you light.
When Christ our life appears you will appear with him in glory.
Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give you light.
from Colossians 3
Benedictus
Refrain:
You have raised up for us a mighty Saviour, born of the house of your servant David.
Blessed be the Lord the God of Israel, who has come to his people and set them free.
He has raised up for us a mighty Saviour, born of the house of his servant David.
Through his holy prophets God promised of old to save us from our enemies, from the hands of all that hate us,
To show mercy to our ancestors, and to remember his holy covenant.
This was the oath God swore to our father Abraham: to set us free from the hands of our enemies,
Free to worship him without fear, holy and righteous in his sight all the days of our life.
And you, child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High, for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,
To give his people knowledge of salvation by the forgiveness of all their sins.
In the tender compassion of our God the dawn from on high shall break upon us,
To shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death, and to guide our feet into the way of peace.
Luke 1.68-79
Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning is now and shall be for ever. Amen.
You have raised up for us a mighty Saviour, born of the house of your servant David.

Collect of the Day
19th Sunday after Trinity
O God, forasmuch as without you we are not able to please you; mercifully grant that your Holy Spirit may in all things direct and rule our hearts; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
Amen.
The Lord’s Prayer is said (here)
As our Saviour taught us, so we pray
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.
The Conclusion
The Lord bless us, and preserve us from all evil, and keep us in eternal life.
Amen.
